My Nissan is running great — so great that I forgot all about its oil changes, for about two years. Walked past an auto shop tonight and thought "duh, it’s been HOW LONG??". Checked the dipstick, thick black gunk. Added some fresh oil. Will get the oil changed tomorrow. I feel terrible because I used to be meticulous about this and then suddenly got all space cadet on my poor car.
That said, I’ve been trying to figure out what else I should do to help my car recover from this abuse. I’ve been looking online and see videos of people disassembling and cleaning engines coated with thick black goo. As bad as I think it is, it probably isn’t quite that bad, since it seems to be running fine and I’m not having any smoke or other problems. Will the fresh oil mix with and soften up the old, thick oil so it will leave the engine more easily during the oil change? Would it be advisable to have a series of oil changes every month or so for while to help clean out the engine, or is that pointless? I’ve seen some discussions of adding transmission fluid for a short time and then changing the oil again as a flush. Advice, please! Thanks so much.

In most cases an engine flush will do the job. The wild card in the situation is whether the sludge has formed hard deposits, particularly deposits that will break loose and jam the oil intake screen. You don’t have a lot of choices. You can’t leave the goo in the engine.
Let your mechanic deal with in the manner they prefer. There’s no need to tear your engine apart. And don’t make any of those suggestions, it will just cost you more $$. Simply explain the situation.
Dont worry this happends ALL the time. I work for an auto shop and people often forget to change their oil. Heres what you do. You need an "engine fast flush" chemical or "oil system cleaner" to get rid of the build up in your engine. Now you can go to autozone or orielys or napa to get you a bottle for about $10 or go to a shop to do it and and they’ll charge you $40 or $50 for that same product. Your call. Also after the oil change add "Lucas oil stablizer" with the new oil. This will help the new oil circulate through your engine and give extra lubrication in the smaller areas that need it.Again you can get this cheaper at an auto parts store for less or at an auto shop for alot more. Use those two adatives to your vehicle and youll be fine. Just be sure to change your oil every 3000 miles!
a half pint of trans fluid then warm up eng. till hot ! then take out the oil pan plug and drain , let sit for 4 hours then put in the plug and fresh oil ….bam like new
Do NOT use oil system "flushes." If you feel the need to "flush" your engine, then get a regular oil change, go drive for an hour, then get a second oil change. This is a reliable, non-destructive manner to do the same thing. Engine flushes always claim to be innocuous, some even claim you could leave them in and drive without ever having a problem. The thing is, if they are to do their job in 10, 5, some even say 2 minutes, they MUST use harsh chemicals, and if they can be left in without affecting the engine, then they were worthless in the first place. Engine flushes are, generally speaking, snake-oil panaceas.
