Archive for 'air filter'

I bought a 2003 Buell Lightning XB9S. Apparently it sat in a cold garage for 3 months in Chicago. I went to change the oil today, and followed the original owners manual correctly. I let the bike run for 15 minutes. It sounded great.
I opened the drain valve, drained the old oil out (which was very black). Replaced the oil filter, then went to fill the oil tank back up with new oil, and it only held 1.5 quarts. The owners manual said it should have held 2.5 including the oil I poured into the new filter. I then realized that the oil pan had way less than 2.5 quarts of old oil in it.
Now I’m stuck. I tried to do the oil change over again. After reopening the drain plug, nothing comes out. I can see the oil tank is full of fresh oil. So I ran the bike for about 1 minute to see if it would circulate. Still nothing drains out, and the tank is full of clean oil.
Does this mean the oil is not circulating? Where should I go from here?
Also. I inspected the air filter, and there is clean oil in the housing around the air filter. Does this mean there is too much oil in the bike?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Rob

With tax I paid 9 in New York State for a local garage for a "tune up and oil change". They said the tune up would help with the slowish starting of the car. It sometimes stalls right after I turn it on after it’s been sitting in hot heather awhile. I paid 8 labor for the tune-up, got a fuel filter, ignition wires, PCV valve, air filter, 4 spark plugs, fuel injector cleaner and the oil change (which seems to be around .00 total). I had no idea it cost so much, my father always told me growing up tune ups weren’t needed, but I figure with the newer cars it might help with the starting and the hot weather’s coming… I have 80k on my Camry so they also said I need a 0-700 timing belt put in ASAP. Yikes. I also asked them fix the sticking gas pedal which they forgot to do and I am afraid to go back to them for fear that could cost a bundle, too. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I’ve used this garage many times before with no problems. They seem honest, but…
thanks everybody for your quick responses. I feel a lot better!!!

My MB clk 320 has 60000 miles, and has done all the scheduled services (B service) at MB dealer. It seems that the B service only check all fluid levels. I wonder if I need to do the services below:
Coolant System Flush
Brake System Flush
Transmission System Flush
Replace Fuel Filter and Air Filter
The engine oil (Mobil 1)is changed every 10000 miles at the dealer upon the request. Is it necessary to change the engine oil every 5000 miles?

I usually take my Ford Ranger to Jiffy Lube for oil changes, but I plan to change that after my visit there yesterday. I’ve got 250,000 miles on my 1995 auto Ranger and the only things I’ve ever had done to it as far as preventative maintenance goes are oil changes every 3,000 miles, new air filter whenever it gets dirty enough and I had a new fuel filter installed around 200,000 miles. That’s it. I’ve never had the radiator flushed or transmission serviced/flushed.

I keep an eye on my fluid levels (radiator fluid, brake fluid, tranny fluid and oil level between oil changes). I’ve never had to add anything other than some radiator fluid maybe once a year so I never mess with anything. Now back to why I’m never going to Jiffy Lube again. I just had both bulbs replaced in the front headlights when I had it inspected a few months ago. I took the Ranger to Jiffy Lube yesterday and like I always do I stood outside near my truck to make sure they weren’t screwing me over.

As soon as they pulled my truck up onto the ramp both front headlights started flashing and the right light died out so they wanted to know if I wanted them to install a new light and I said no. The sales guy then took me through the spin of saying that I needed my transmission serviced, radiator flushed, fuel lines flushed, battery terminals cleaned, a bottle of oil additives to "extend" the life of the oil and last but not least a bottle of gas additives to clean my fuel system.

I said no to everything, but had I said yes then my bill would have come to over 0. I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried folks. On top of all that, they charged me for premium oil instead of the regular oil I usually have them use for . They didn’t even ask. With that said, what exactly do you guys do for preventative maintenance? BTW, the right headlight suddenly worked again as soon as I drove away.

I went to Jiffy Lube and got my oil change. They told me I need a new air filter. They told me that the bolts were stripped and couldn’t take that one off.Since they were the only place I ever took to get an oil change and I do have the papers showing that they put the last one on,shouldn’t they pay if I have to take it elseware to have it taken off.Any body have an idea on how to do it without going to a car place?
It’s a Honda Civic LX 2002

I had a oil change/filter yesterday at JIFFY LUBE i DONT KNOW TO MUCH ABOUT CARS…. but i read my fuel perceantage on how it was at 44 percent good on my 2008 cobalt LT…. so when i was done geting my oil changed.. I looked at it expecting to see it at 100 percent it wasnt .still at 44 %..so i figured maybe there was still…old oil in the valves… but i went on a trip..150 miles still read 44%at the end when i came home.. and this morning when.. to went to the store the oil still read at 44 percent good..does this mean i was dupped>>/? and didnt change the oil..i did drive 150 miles and did expect the oil percentage to be at 100 percent but isnt..?.. or is there a way i can check if they did do the services i paid for..? and how much oil should have put in there.. im thinking they might of have just drained half and put half of what i paid for…reason why it reads 44%?still.. my vehicle is 2008 cobalt lt sedan.
how much liters of oil shoudl have beeen put in? and how do i check the air filter to see if it has been replaced?

My dad always made me change my own oil or I would trick him in to doing it for me but that is no longer an option because I moved.

So I went to jiffy Lube and to put the same oil I always used it would cost like 60 dollars so I just got the cheap stuff. They washed all my window but actaully just left streak marks.

I had told them my air filter was new yet they still brought it to me and said "It looks new you don’t want to replace it do you?"

Can I buy my own oil and take it there and just have them do the labor and not touch anything else on my car?
I really don’t trust them.
Thanks everyone for answering you all gave great answers.Looks like i’m not the only one that doesn’t trust them.

I have a 1997 Toyota Camry xle 3.0 v6 engine and I was getting the P0420 error code, and took my vehicle to a muffler shop and had the catalytic converter and the long pipe that connects to it changed with a universal catalytic converter. The pipe was changed because it had several holes and was making the car really loud. I had the code cleared after that was done and about 2months later the code came back on and I was told by Napa auto parts to have it cleared again and I did; and if it came back on then I needed to replace the downstream O2 senor; and the check engine light did come back on reading the same code PO420. But I have read lots of different reviews on line and I am very confused now. What should I do?

The only thing the car is doing wrong is drinking lots of gas, I am getting like 17miles to the gallon (awful). My mother did purchase this car used about 8 months ago but in the last month we have changed the spark plugs and wires, air filter, pvc value, oil and oil filter, and gas mileage still has not improved

I drive a 1994 Chevy Corsica. Should I get the "Fuel Saver Package" at the mechanic’s, or a "Tune Up" at Good Year or Jiffy Lube, or is that just a gimmick? What do they do in a "fuel and emissions system cleaning" anyway?

I do those gas treatments every couple of months (for all I know those could be a gimmick too), I recently changed my air filter, I got new tires and wheel alignment about eight months ago…

Can I just get an oil change or is it worth all that extra money for whatever it is they do in a "tune up"?

Honda says that when I take the car in for an oil change they are able to bring up "codes" (can’t be pulled up by jiffy lube shops) that will tell them if there is anything else wrong with the car that needs to be serviced. Is this just their way of making money or should I listen to them? I am just afraid that if I take it to Honda to have the oil changed (forgot to mention they rotate tires for an additional on top of the for the oil change) they are going to try to hit me up for a bunch of random fees.

Also, my car just hit 10k miles. What are some rules of thumb that I should follow (i.e. rotate tires, air filter, brakes, etc)?
By the way… Yes the oil has already been changed. I am now at about 30%, but will be due shortly again… The car was taken to a non Honda dealer, and I was talking to Honda, and that is why this question arose…

Just had the oil changed in my 05 Camry. Service person said I needed a new air filter and a new cabin filter. I was charged for the air filter and for the cabin filter. My husband says this is a big rip-off and if we even needed the filters, he could get them much cheaper at the auto parts store. The car only has 20,000 miles on it and he doubts that we even need an new air filter and has never heard of a cabin filter. Of course if I waited for him to do this the car would be 10 years old by the time it was done. He says this is just an extra way for the quick-lube to make more money. Is he right?

I am going to change Oil on my own, of coarse gonna get a hand from my mechanic friend. But just to have basic ideas, what do workers at Jiffy Lube check? I know how to check air filter, windshield wiper liquid, stop lights and what not. But there must be some other checks right? such as radiator and stuff. I understand that my car is corolla and Toyota is red color, should I change fluid every time I change oil? when do I know when to change other than overheating my car?

thank you

From a local mechanic who looks pretty reputable it looks like I can get all of the following done for the prices indicated. I NEED to get an oil change, and I think my transmission may be leaking just a tad.

1. Replace oil filter/oil/air filter… drain and refill transmission and radiator fluid, rotate tires, and just a thorough check of everything else. 169.00

2. Brakes replaced, repack bearings if needed, top off fluid, and 12 month 12000 mile warranty on em. 99.00

3. Replace fuel injectors. 69.00

So im looking at 340.00 for all of that, is that a fair price? Thanks! :D
