I live in the state of Utah. Last night I went out and bought a 1999 Pontiac Montana. From what it looks like and sounds like, its in awesome condition. My husband and I thought that the detailing in the van was better than what a dealership could perform. The Engine was clean, (my husband suspected that it had been steamed cleaned recently). The mileage on the Odometer reads 125121 miles. The seller stated he had it for a year and wanted to upgrade- his wife wanted something more flashy and new, so they were selling this one. The price was negotiated and we paid below KBB standards. When we came home I found some maintnance records for the van in the glove box and started to go through them. I noticed that it was owned by a lady since 2003- and according to her records the last time the van had 125000 miles on it was in Dec of 2007 when she had some work done! As I reviewed it further, I also saw that the tires were rotated, balanced and aligned on the van in Nov 2008 (yes, in the same lady’s name, not the seller we just bought it from) and actually had a warranty for that service on the tires, but the mechanic had wrote the odometer at being 143378 miles and the warranty was good till 162459 miles! Stupid me, decided to take a look at the tiltle that was given to us when we bought it last night. The title states that the seller only bought it Dec 3 2008 (yes, last month) and that the mileage read 113118 miles at that time ????!!!!!!!! So this guy we bought the van from, put on 12000 miles in one month???!!! Something does not add up- I am frustrated! Is it not illegal to mess with vehicle odometers? What, if anything, should I, or could I, do? My husband said it was our fault for not being more attentive to details, like a "buyer beware" thing. But if we take it to Jiffy Lube (where most of the oil changes were done on this vehicle when the original owner had it) They will have record of the mileage- I don’t want to be in trouble for something I didn’t do! And now I am afraid that the vehicle may have more problems, we just don’t know it! Any advice?
