I’m growing tired of my 02′ Audi after 8 years of ownership. The WRX has all wheel drive and the BMW uses rear wheel drive. The interior, fit and finish of the BMW is much better than the Subaru. The BMW is tad faster at 13.3 in the 1/4, but cost about 3K more, no biggie. The STi is a bit more to insure. I have NO plans on modding. The BMW comes with free dealer oil changes using synthetic oil for the first 50k or 4 years of ownership.

I just had my 2003 Dodge Neon serviced at a Jiffy Lube (oil change, tire rotation). Since then, my steering wheel vibrates quite severely once I reach about 60 MPH. The vibration happens cyclically, going from minor, to moderate, to severe, then back down to moderate then minor (and repeat). Each cycle takes about 2-3 seconds, and is accompanied by a rumbling noise that follows the same cyclical severity.

This isn’t a normal symptom of tire rotation, is it? Should I just take it back to Jiffy Lube and let them know what’s going on? Thanks.

Did I get royally screwed by this mechanic?

Here’s the bill:

PREM SEMI MET PADS =
DISC BRAKE ROTOR =
COMPLETE FRONT DISC LABOR = 0
PREMIUM SHOES =
REAR BRAKE DRUM & SHOE LABOR = 0
COMBINATION KIT =
INSTALLED REAR WHEEL CYLINDERS =
WHEEL CYLINER =
BLEED & FLUSH BRAKE SYSTEM =
DISPOSAL FEE =

TOTAL = ,000
(plus an oil change and a "free serpentine belt replacement" because it didn’t solve the squeeking sound.)

I went in asking for a 100,000 mile tune up and got a call saying that the rear brakes were leaking and "needed a lot of work." I feel like I got royally screwed by this mechanic and am debating whether to go back to this guy. He has really good reviews on Yelp and everyone seems to love him, but I have my doubts. Is this bill ridiculous or is pretty sane?!

Thanks in advance!!

I drive a 1994 Chevy Corsica. Should I get the "Fuel Saver Package" at the mechanic’s, or a "Tune Up" at Good Year or Jiffy Lube, or is that just a gimmick? What do they do in a "fuel and emissions system cleaning" anyway?

I do those gas treatments every couple of months (for all I know those could be a gimmick too), I recently changed my air filter, I got new tires and wheel alignment about eight months ago…

Can I just get an oil change or is it worth all that extra money for whatever it is they do in a "tune up"?

1. oil, lube, filter: oil change – 3000 miles or 3 months. How often should I change lube? Filter?

2. At this time, I can also ask the mechanic to fill up my tires. Should I fill up my tires more often than 3 months?

3. power steering fluid – How long does it last or how often should I change?

4. coolant/anti-freeze – How long does it last or how often should I change?

5. break fluid – How long does it last or how often should I change?

6. Transmission fluid – How long does it last or how often should I change?

7. Differences in regular, mid-grade, and premium gasoline. Is premium necessarily the best? How often should I fill up premium gasoline?

8. windshield wiper blades – How long do they last or how often should I change?

9. freons – How long does it last? How can I maintain my car so the freons lasts the maximum?

10. How often should I wash my car? Wax?

11. How often should I clean the interior?

12. Am I leaving out anything else?

The reason I ask these questions is because I want to maintain my vehicle myself as much as possible. The only exception is oil, lube, and filter change and freons. Thank you. I would greatly appreciate your help.

We are certainly a nation of short attention spanned people. 3 weeks ago all you read here and all you saw on TV was gas prices, oil company ripoffs, complaint about lack of government help. Now prices have dropped a little and we have all quit talking. And we wonder why nothing changes. Until we get actually ready to change our habits, nothing will change. See you all about labor day when prices go back up.
Whoa wait guys, I’m right there with ya. That’s what I mean about changing habits. I drive 60k a year for business and see the vast majority driving way too fast wasting fuel. People are driving more than ever in big vehicles pulling 5th wheel rv’s and complaining about gas. If everyone would slow down t the speed limit, gas would go down. I’m all for the supply and demand side. Keep Washington out of it.

My car is a little over 25,000 miles. I get regular oil changes done to it. I haven’t rotated the tires once (oops.)

Some coupons came in from the dealership offering deals on maintenance to my car. The problem is that the costs involved are only "checking," not actually replacing the part.

I have a coupon for tire rotation .35

Four wheel alignment .95…..check steering, suspension and shocks. Set toe-in, camber and caster (where applicable.) Check tie-rods and ball joints. Check tire pressure and inspect tires for cuts, damage, and uneven wear. Plus tax.

Mainenance Special .95…..Change engine oil, filter. Rotate tires. Inspect air filter & Brake system.

I also notice that my car, when I hit bumps/potholes, makes a large rattling, especially in the front right. My friends and family say my car sounds like crap when I hit any kind of bump.

Also, sometimes when I brake, I hear a light knocking coming from the front, my brake pedal is fine, it’s just coming from where the tires are I think.

So, please give me advice. Which coupon(s) should I /need I use, and do you think they can check the rattling since my car is still under warranty?

      Thanks!

they told me it was for an extra quart and a special oil filter that came on four wheel drives. I know synthetic is more than regular but it shouldn’t cost double.

My mom woke me up because my aunt had a question. Gah! I called 6 EZ lubes but they aren’t answering. My aunt wants to know if they change oil on a diesel van, it’s a type of van that transports dialysis patients and those on wheel chairs.
OK, thanks for the answers. Now I’ll go back to sleep. Gosh can’t believe my aunt couldn’t figure it out to ask herself.
