what engine oil should i use for my Hyundai Santro, 4 cylinder, 1000cc petrol engine? So far i have been using Shell oil having ratings of 10W-40. There is another Shell oil of 20W-50 ratings and that is cheap too. So which one to use? The temperature at my place is from -1 to 50 Degree Centigrades.
And pls tell me when to have a oil change. Currently i do it at 3000km.

In my opinion, you should stick with the oil weight specified in your car owner’s manual by your manufacturer. The engineers designed the engine to operate properly using all the fluids specified in your owner’s manual. Who thinks they know more than the manufacturer and engineers that designed the car about the engine oil it should use? Your manufacturer may allow conventional or synthetic oils of the specified weight.

50 degrees C is well over 100 F, in that heat I would use synthetic like Amsoil: http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=1463115&page=products
see the operators manual and the specification of the recommended oils will be given in it and use the correct grad oil.
I would Recomend using castrol syntec 10w30 , as it is a full synthetic oil, I run castrol motor oils in all my vehicles ,73 ford 460v8,99pontiac 3.1and even in my 2007 chev deisel, I have found that castrol syntec is one of the better oils because on a deisel engine the oil usually turns black wiyh in 1to2 days but the castrol only turns a darker brown that you can still read through at about 3500 kms . Iwould recommend this oil for your car and you could do your oil changes at 5000 to 7500 km intervals instead of every 3000kms
